In basketball

The 5 players are called starters, whereas the others are substitutes or bench players. Commonly the starters are the five best players at their position in a team, although many coaches have the strategy of putting some of them on the bench. Therefore, there is some sort of prestige in being named as a starter on a team.

The starting lineup on a basketball is usually compromised of five positions:

• Point guard called the "1" position
• Shooting guard "2"
• Small forward "3"
• Power forward "4"
• Center "5"
